Quando a força é aplicada sobre um lado do dente, as fibras do ligamento periodontal do lado oposto ficam comprimidas contra o osso, e após algum tempo, o dente começa a se mover. Durante essa movimentação é normal que o paciente sinta um pouco de dor e desconforto. Mas à medida que o dente se movimenta, a sensação dolorosa diminui.
Toda vez que os aparelhos ortodônticos são “apertados”, a cada consulta, esse fenômeno se repete. Uma vez que o seu dente tenha sofrido a primeira movimentação, as próximas se tornam menos dolorosas. Quando o dente chegar na posição correta não será necessária a aplicação de uma nova força sobre ele, e é aí que o ortodontista decide colocar um aparelho de contenção. Esse aparelho permite que o osso de suporte retorne a uma condição normal e confortável.
